Moving Day

Your Moving-Day Checklist

The last 48 hours have their own rhythm. Handle these and you'll glide through the big day.

Bottom line: the final days are about the small stuff that makes a huge difference. Get the fridge, the walkthrough, and your first-night bag right, and moving day feels calm instead of chaotic.

A day or two before

Bottom line: handle the fridge and confirm your help.

Defrost and clean out the refrigerator one to two days ahead so it's dry and ready to move. Reconfirm the date and details with your movers or helpers, and finish packing everything except the essentials you'll need right up to the last minute.

Pack a first-night bag

Bottom line: don't dig through boxes at midnight.

Set aside a bag with everything you'll want that first night in the new place:

  • Toiletries and medications
  • Basic bedding
  • A few changes of clothes
  • Important documents and chargers
  • Everyday dishes and a few snacks

Do a final walkthrough

Bottom line: check every closet, cabinet, and corner.

Before you lock up, walk the whole place one last time — closets, cabinets, the attic, the garage, and outdoor spaces. It's amazing what hides behind a door on moving day. And given our summer heat, pack a cooler with ice water and snacks so everyone stays comfortable while the truck loads.

Moving-day essentials

  • Fridge defrosted and cleaned
  • Movers/helpers confirmed
  • First-night bag packed and set aside
  • Final walkthrough done
  • Cooler with water and snacks ready
